Hill Country Easter Rally 2

I was thrilled to learn that an Airstream Rally was taking place in Johnson City, Texas which is about 30 minutes outside of Fredericksburg, where we were staying for Easter weekend. I logged onto the Airforums and introduced myself to the Rally leader and told him that we would be interested in stopping by for a quick hello. This was our first Rally that we had ever attended. We showed up at the Roadrunner RV Park and to my delight we saw so many shiny, aluminum Airstreams! I was in ‘Streaming Heaven. Our host, Bruce W. took us under his wing, introduced us to so many folks and gave us tours of as many Airstreams that we could fit into one afternoon. A big thanks goes out to Bruce, Roseann, Harvey, Harvey’s Mom, Joi, George, Bonnie, Sid, David, David, Red and the rest of the Rally gang for all the questions you all answered for us and allowing us to tour your trailer homes! What an Airstream treat!!

An Airstream Rally is an event one must not miss. It’s a great time to meet new friends, catch up with old friends, cook together, drink together, play games, tour each others trailers and just have a relaxing time. At this Rally, Bruce and his team put together a weekend filled with BBQ’s, Egg Toss Event, Egg Rolling Event, Easter Bonnet decorating competition, dinners, lunches and so much more. Fun was had by all including the resident ‘Streaming pooches that accompanied their parents to the Rally.  Looking forward to more Rallies in our future and can’t wait to attend one with our Airstream!

Welcome to Wimberley 1

Whenever traveling in the Texas Hill Country~our visit wouldn’t be complete without a stop in darling Wimberley, Texas. Wimberley is located on the banks of Cypress Creek and the Blanco River surrounded by the Texas Hill Country. Wimberley is just one hour outside of both Austin and San Antonio. The small town “Square” and “Olde Towne Plaza” are filled with local artisan shops (our favorite is The Old Mill Store), unique western wares, art galleries (we really enjoy Pitzer’s Fine Art) , theatre, restaurants and so much more. Wimberley has the honor of being designated one of America’s Ten Best Small Towns” by Travel Holiday Magazine. Locals claim Wimberley is “A Little Bit of Heaven”. I couldn’t agree more!

Our favorite restaurant is The Leaning Pear. We never miss a chance to dine at this local, organic, divine spot in the Hill Country. Honestly, it’s one of our all-time favorite dining establishments! The restaurant is owned by native Texans Rachel and Matthew Buchanan. After spending time in Perugia, Italy, Matthew received his culinary degree from the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America in NY.

In 2006 the restaurant opened after the complete restoration of the Lowery House , one of the oldest buildings in Wimberley. Ingredients are sourced from local farmers and every effort is made to provide fresh, made from scratch and innovative edibles.

Our tasty lunch consisted of~the restaurant signature salad: The Leaning Pear Salad (Perfection), a chilled Celery Soup (Divine), BBLT with Brie (Yumm-a-licious), Lump Crab Cake (Terrific) and Lemon Panna Cotta (Superbly light and refreshing). Delish!!! And, the services is always efficient, friendly and casual. We are always in food bliss when we dine at The Leaning Pear. Don’t miss The Pear on your next trip to Wimberley.

And who could miss being “whispered” by The Boot Whisperer, Ulli of The Wild West Store. Ulli is known for being able to fit you in boots by a quick glance at your feet. Some folks call her the boot psychic.  This Wimberley jewel has more than 500 pairs of vintage cowboy boots in stock that range from the 1940s through 1980. A must see shopping adventure!

Hey Austin ~ Hey Cupcake! 1

I just returned home after a delightful weekend away to the Texas Hill Country. Over the next several posts, I’ll be highlighting some of my adventures. On our way to the airport, I asked Hubs to drive to downtown Austin for a peek at a Cupcake Airstream. What else, right? So, down we drove on the hippest street in Austin, South Congress a.k.a. SoCo! Not only does SoCo have some great eats, it’s a haven for Retro clothing boutiques, funky shops and unique to Austin stores. Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds and Electric Ladyland (a wild and way out crazy boutique) is where Bob Dylan is rumored to have shopped for retro outfits.

Food Trailers are a big hit in this “weird” city of Austin and many are found on South Congress. This is where we found Hey Cupcake! Wes Hurt, the owner of Hey Cupcake! had traveled to NYC and saw how successful Magnolia Bakery was just by selling cupcakes. Wes’ homegrown vision was brought to light and now there are several locations (all in Airstreams, of course) around town selling over 7000 cupcakes per week. And those are some good cakes, I promise you!! So, next time you are in Austin, Texas stop on by to get yourself some Airstream lov’in while enjoying the frosty goodness of Hey Cupcake!
