One of my favorite pastimes is meeting new people. I especially love meeting new peeps in small towns. Not sure why small town folks are so special to me, but they are. And when I travel to these small towns to meet the locals, I always search out the best local “eats”. There is nothing I can’t stand more than to pay for bad food, even if it’s cheap. I prefer dining in local “dives” even more than a fancy, white table-cloth establishment. So, on my recent trip to the Texas Hill Country, I discovered my new favorite find for breakfast and lunch in charming Fredericksburg, Texas. Thanks to my dear friend Deborah Harrington, a talented and accomplished artist, for sharing her local favorite morning spot, Woerner Warehouse with me. Located just off the main drag in downtown Fredericksburg at 305 South Lincoln St., Woerners offers not only an amazing breakfast but, fresh baked goodies, breads, coffee, lunch and you can still stop by to pickup some hardware supplies. It’s not fancy nor expensive but, the food and atmosphere is steller. You won’t be dissappointed, I promise! Woerner Warehouse was established in 1928 and was the local feed and hardware store. Now it’s a fun, casual spot for locals to share a cup of java and catch up on the local gossip. A must try the next time you are in Fredericksburg.

Fredericksburg RV Park

Amarillo to Fredericksburg, Texas is a 463 mile tow. Very easy drive, flat and the weather was perfect. We arrived at the Fredericksburg RV Park late in the afternoon. We were thrilled to be back in the Texas Hill Country!

F’burg RV Park offers spacious sites which all have picnic tables, full-hook ups, cable, excellent wi-fi, pull-throughs, some grass, a tree or two and is very level. Our rate was $40 per day less 10% Good Sam discount. We were in #14 but, next visit would prefer site #68 or #69. But, there really isn’t a bad spot anywhere in the park. The entire park is meticulously kept and is a very comfortable place to stay. It’s just one mile from the main street in downtown Fredericksburg.

The main office is right at the entrance to the park. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They do have supplies to purchase and maps of everything to do in town. The laundry facility was very nice and very clean. The park also has shower facilities, free ice, pet walk area, restrooms and a rec hall. I think I got very spoiled at this RV park!

We met a very nice family from Katy, TX who also own a 27′ International Signature. They gave us a tour of their remodeled Airstream which included new corian counters, new upholstery on the lounge, new corian dinette and dual AC units. Guess one needs 2 AC units to survive the heat of the Texas summers. Always meeting supper nice Airstreamers and other RV’ers!

When Beatrice arrived in Fredericksburg, she was so filthy we could barely look out the windows. Without supplies to clean her ourselves we decided to hire a mobile RV washing service. It did take them a few days to commit to the job but, once the guy came out, he did a fabulous job and Beatrice was looking fine.

Other views of the park and of course, we learned that Otis just adores camping. He preferred being outside on his bed than inside the Big B. He had a ball meeting new doggies and peeps alike.

Cadillac Ranch

Our stop in Amarillo, TX was merely to spend the night and move on out the next morning! But, I had to see the famous Cadillac Ranch. If you are ever in Amarillo, follow I-4o and take exit 62. You’ll see the large field that is the home to the wild and crazy Cadillac Ranch. Worth a visit for sure.

From Wikipedia: “Cadillac Ranch is a public art installation and sculpture in Amarillo, Texas, U.S. It was created in 1974 by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels, who were a part of the art group Ant Farm, and it consists of what were (when originally installed during 1974) either older running used or junk Cadillac automobiles, representing a number of evolutions of the car line (most notably the birth and death of the defining feature of mid twentieth century Cadillacs; the tailfins) from 1949 to 1963, half-buried nose-first in the ground, at an angle corresponding to that of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.^“

Amarillo Ranch RV Park

First stop in Texas after towing 432 miles was the Amarillo Ranch RV Park. Just west of downtown Amarillo off Route 40 ~ the Ranch is a nice place for a one night stop over. The sites are bare with mostly dirt and gravel (very little grass) but, spacious and full-hook ups. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and most sites are pull-through. We were in spot #120 and it was perfect for a one evening stay. They are pet friendly, have good wi-fi and cable, a pool, clubhouse, pavilion, showers, coin laundry and a fenced pet area (not big enough for Otis but, oh well!!). Rate: $33 per night less Good Sam or AAA discount. I would recommend the Ranch for a nights stay because it’s easy access off the highway and a breeze to check-in and move on out the next morning!

A few local attractions in Amarillo: American Quarter Horse Museum, The Cadillac Ranch, Palo Duro Canyon and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.

We met the nicest couple from Texas who were heading to the Vintage Trailer Academy in Albuquerque, NM. They restored their ’73 International Airstream and it’s gorgeous. They invited to give us a tour and we reciprocated and gave them a tour of Beatrice. Check out the original wall mounted oven that still works perfectly! Airstream owners are the nicest peeps I have ever met. Always wanting to share travel stories and just sit awhile and chat! One of the many aspects about traveling in my Airstream that brings me much joy!
